Twink: Think Pink V

Psychedelic rock icon Twink is best known as a member of Tomorrow, The Pink Fairies and The Pretty Things. However, for those in the know, it’s Twink’s Think Pink album from 1970 that sets him apart as a true icon of the psychedelic rock era. From 2015 onwards this percussionist, singer and songwriter has revisited the Think Pink ethos through a variety of attacks that all centre in one way or another around the original basis the 1970 album spawned from. For part five the core ‘band’ is two people, Twink and Ed Sykes who handles nearly everything other than percussion and vocals.

The overall impression is dreamy, relaxed, laid back and very much in the territory of smooth space rock. Vocally there’s a mixture of spoken word, singing, poetry and some other spoken ideas lain on top of meandering, soothing ideals. “Silver White Horses� perches on a guitar line that feels like it just floated in from the old Status Quo hit, “Pictures Of Matchstick Men�, but without the gentle push that song delivered. “Rainbow Warriors� darts into being with a welcome groove and an insistent synth line that really does stick in the mind, although maybe that’s because it is repeated countless times throughout the song.

Where, as a casual visitor to these musical shores, things are less engaging is when Twink decides that his spoken word or ‘poetry recitals set to music’ are the way to go. “Fool Moon� just sounding a little too tired as the words try to contrast the mystical 60s to the modern day in intentionally jarring style. “My Rose� is, however, the track which suffers worst in this department, a traded vocal between a love struck space-age hippy talking of his undying adoration of ‘my rose’ and a cynical counterpoint which sneers back at every word, all remarkably irksome. I have to admit that after two listens to this track I could suffer its heavy handedness no more.

For followers of Twink, I have no doubt that Think Pink V will be filled with little tidbits that will delight and thrill. For a more casual observer like myself there’s simply not enough going here on to hold the attention beyond the best two or three songs.
