Lucifer: V

The Swedish/German conglomerate known as Lucifer is back with their fifth platter of doom-laden psychedelic retro rock, and once again, they've hit the ball out of the park. V gives us all that this band does so well, from the opening 1-2 blast of "Fallen Angel" and "At the Mortuary, we see Lucifer delivering hard-hitting '70s styled heavy rock, doom, and groovy late '60s inspired psychedelia, all wrapped in occult imagery and perfectly enunciated by the lovely frontwoman Johanna Sadonis. She has an enchanting voice that continually proves to be just what this style of music needs, further evident on rocking & hooky tracks like "Riding Reaper", "A Coffin Has No Silver Lining" (what a chorus!), and the throbbing "Maculate Heart". It's almost as if the band arrived from a time capsule straight out of 1968 in San Francisco. You also have the slow, menacing blues of "Slow Dance in a Crypt" and "Nothing Left to Lose But My Life", the fist-pumping metal anthem "The Dead Don't Speak", and the upbeat crusher "Strange Sister", all fueled by killer guitar riffs from Martin Nordin & Linus Björklund, the always rock solid drumming of legend Nicke Andersson, and the pumping bass grooves courtesy of Harald Göthblad.

Lucifer once again has delivered a stellar album here with V, and it still perplexes me how this band isn't a household name at this point. Nine fun, concise new songs that deliver all we love about the band, and Johanna is quite frankly an absolute joy. This is an easy contender for album of 2024.
