Mount Atlas: Poseidon

In the mood for some Hammond organ, heavy guitars, and a retro '70s & '80s vibe? Then look no further than the latest release from German hard rockers Mount Atlas, titled Poseidon. Blending the best of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and the NWOBHM, Mount Atlas has a few EPs out, but this appears to be their first full-length, and it's a banger from start to finish, filled with catchy choruses, roaring guitars, and loads and loads of Hammond organ swells. The album gains momentum right from the outset with "Down to Earth", a fast-paced rocker that instantly gets your blood pumping, and it doesn't let up with the even more frantic "Throne of Gold", a blistering track that at just under 3-minutes, needs to be longer. "Alien Sunrise" is more of a plodder, but the Hammond is so enjoyable, and the chorus is quite memorable. Images of Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers" pop up on the heavy, Hammond-driven cruncher "The Captain", easily one of my favorites here, and the headbanging fun of "I'll Be Your Guide" reminds at times of the great Swedish band Grand Magus, especially vocally. The title track has a certain power metal meets doom flair, something "Magic Potion" also does, with thick doom-laden riffs and some cool proggy synths. The album closes with two groovy hard rockers in "Prehistoric" and "Elysium", both providing plenty of moments to bang thy head and get into the spirit of it all.

Poseidon is ultimately a lot of fun, as it provides for lots of heavy moments but remains memorable and engaging for those who like their music with serious heft but also melodic. Throw in those tasty prog styled keyboards, and you have an album that is well worth investigating. Hopefully we hear more from Mount Atlas in the near future!
