Spillage: Phase Four

What would it sound like at a secret midnight jam between Savatage, Jon Lord, Trouble, and Robin McAuley? Probably something like Phase Four, the latest release from Chicago heavy metal act Spillage. Co-produced by guitarist Tony Spillman and Trouble guitarist Bruce Franklin, Phase Four is a crunchy, heavy affair that offers up no shortage of crushing riffs and effective vocals, with Elvin Rodriguez hitting similar heights to the great McAuley, though he has a bit more of an aggressive edge to his voice compared to the beloved MSG/Grand Prix belter. Some of these riffs though on songs like the title track, "Nail Biter", "Rise of Machines", "Nothing to See", and "Again" are absolutely gargantuan, bringing to mind Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King and Trouble's classic self-titled release. Massive stuff here. And when you toss in the cool Hammond organ on tracks "The Eleventh Hour", "Demon, I", and the doomy "Love and Alchemy", the results are just glorious.

Spillage have been around for a number of years now, and have a few albums under their belt, and though I can't speak for their back catalog, Phase Four is definitely a metal album not to be missed here in early 2024.
