Gravity Fields: Disruption

In my experience, whenever I find my head nodding to the opening track of an album it’s probably a pretty good sign of things to come. That was true of Gravity Fields’ debut album Disruption for me.

The Barcelona-based instrumental group is comprised of three members of bands SoT readers may be familiar with: the neo-prog outfit Harvest and the jazz fusion ensemble On the Raw. Those musicians are Jordi Amela on keyboards, Alex Ojea on drums, and Jordi Prats on guitar. They are joined by Toni Munné on bass, who did play on the third and final Harvest album but was absent from the rest and both On the Raw albums. Pep Espasa was a member of On the Raw and makes a guest appearance playing flute and sax on the track “Prime Time.”

I listen to a lot of instrumental music but I can’t find a band to compare Gravity Fields with directly. You hear some Mahavishnu Orchestra at times, some Brand X at others, and occasionally some Bruford. Gravity Fields probably gets heavier at points than those groups did. They certainly get more electronic, at least when those bands were in their primes, and if I have one complaint about the album, that’s it. But Gravity Fields usually brings the music back to a more traditional jazz-rock feel in time; I didn’t give up on any of the songs, though I considered hitting skip on a few. All 11 tracks are of moderate length, ranging between about four and six minutes. So, don’t expect any epics.

The packaging for Disruption, released by Red Phone Records, is great. The CD comes in a nice case with an attractive cover and the liner notes present well-done illustrations for each track. Overall, this is an impressive album. If you like jazzy instrumental music with prog stylings and can tolerate some electronica, I would recommend it.
