Seven Impale: Summit

Here is a band we have not heard from in quite some time. Bergen, Norway’s Seven Impale’s last release was Contrapasso in 2016, following their 2014 debut City of the Sun. Last year the band released their third album titled Summit, and folks, it is another crazy journey through the realm of eclectic progressive rock as only Seven Impale can achieve. This is some wondrously weird stuff, that is certainly difficult to peel apart. So much so I don’t even try. You just have to trust the band and let their madness and creative juices take you to another time, another place, hell, maybe even another dimension. That is how wild this music can get. Perhaps the weirdest part is how this jumble of chaos seems to somehow gel, allowing your brain to take it all in.

There are four tracks, each in the ten-minute range, ensuring plenty of space for instrumental flourishes and rhythmic virtuosity. The first track “Hunter” starts with a stark keyboard salvo, repeating, getting more intense, before the drum rhythms crash and burn, and a darker theme emerges from the ashes. Huge, thunderous rhythms, creating a sense of ominous dread, and finally the vocals enter. For me, this is one of the highlights of the album. The vocals are excellent throughout the disc. At times, the vocals give off a Haken vibe, I’m thinking The Mountain in terms of delivery and tone. Each track will take you through numerous changes and dramatic shifts of tension, through varying shades of light and dark. The next three tracks are equally creative and enthralling.

That about wraps it up. These musicians have the uncanny ability to make the complex and chaotic more easily digestible, and the results are exhilarating. Summit is easily another four-star release for me!
