Visser, Sebastiaan: In the Box

The endless search for guitar music continues, and the latest to come across my radar is Sebastiaan Visser. Visser hails from the Netherlands and treats you to lyrical and tasty playing on his latest In The Box. The opening “Mania Mart” for me is the showcase track, a slow start that builds and eventually explodes into terrific soloing from Visser in its all too brief five minutes. The guitar is the voice here as it carries simple yet catchy melodies, and steps out for some solo spots. I find the band to be understated, at times feeling they are holding back. That being said, I enjoy Visser’s playing, he sneaks up on you as this album has over repeated listens. The longest track “Vice Versa” features extended soloing courtesy of Igor Herstel (keyboards), and Deborah Slijkhuis (bass) to play off of Visser. “Cyclone” kicks back until the three-minute mark before turning up the heat, at this point commanding attention. “In The Box” as a whole has a tendency to lean a little too heavily on the smooth side, although done well; a little more gusto would be nice. “Dislocation” and “Twelve Fools” are the other tracks that vie for Visser’s best soloing moments on the album. After suggesting Visser should turn things up a bit, I’ll admit that the soloing in the laid-back “Exactly Wrong” is perfect for the song, really nice.

In all seriousness, Visser is an excellent player, and the compositions showcase a very melodic side that many will find enjoyable. I really enjoyed this record; I just wish Visser had followed up his jabs with a knockout punch. As a final note, In The Box could be in the running for the worst album cover of 2023, gotta up that cover art game Sebastiaan!!
