Persefone: Lingua Ignota- Part I

Andorran act Persefone is set to release Lingua Ignota: Part I. Lingua Ignota is Latin for "unknown language", and is referenced by the band to mean ‘the universal language that touches everyone and everything yet cannot be spoken or written’. Either way, the release is not to be confused with the musical offerings of Kristin Hayter!

Lingua Ignota: Part I is a 5-track offering that also serves to be the recorded debut for the bands' new vocalist, Daniel Rodríguez Flys.

I’ve been a casual listener of Persefone’s music for a while now and at times this EP sees them take their usual blend of melodeath and progressive metal toward more of a modern, metalcore/deathcore sound. I’m quite interested to see what diehard fans of the band think of this relatively new direction. I’d imagine most fans will enjoy it, but I wouldn’t be totally surprised to see it polarise some sections of their fan base.

The modern edge to this release continues to make this band so hard to pigeonhole, but there’s no doubt the band are all top-notch musicians and with compositional nous. There are some serious chops displayed on this release, and some intricate song craft too. Despite the release containing a lot of the elements that usually grab me I’m not totally captivated by the whole offering, perhaps because the release is so varied. To single out a highlight the choice is easy though; the second track “One Word” is a clear standout"it contains a bit of everything and is anchored by a very strong and memorable melodic chorus. I’m not surprised at all that the band has led the release with this track as the single.
