Rooftops & Satellites: Last Chance Diner

From Oslo in the beautiful country of Norway Rooftops & Satellites' newest album Last Chance Diner has been out since summer 2023 on their Bandcamp site but hopefully, it's now available in physical formats. Either way, it's worthy of attention largely because of good songs and a sympathetic production by Ken Ingwersen.

The band's Terje Kjoerlaug told me 'we're not a hard rock outfit per se, but there are some numbers with a slightly harder edge, a bit of prog even!' he's not wrong, there's a decidedly pop-rock nature to tunes such as the excellent "Radio Signals" which evokes a time and place where you'd roll the car windows down and cruise down the metaphorical and potentially literal highway. At times the sound veers towards yacht rock but doesn't anchor itself within the generic tropes you'd expect, "King of All He Deserves" takes a rocky and almost proggy turn halfway through which keeps the listener on their toes. Then immediately after Hotel Illusion goes straight to the West Coast in a delightful, laid-back style.

Last Chance Diner is one of those outta nowhere albums you didn't know you either wanted or needed but you're really glad you heard. If you like smooth AOR with a twist give it a whirl, you won't be disappointed.
