Danko Jones: Electric Sounds

Danko Jones are one of those bands who still feel somewhat like new kids on the block, so how they’ve managed to now be nearing 30 years together and have just released their 11th album, who knows? The new release in question is Electric Sounds, and it has to be said that it’s well titled, the Danko Jones up and at ‘em reputation fully intact as you get to know this straight to the point rock record. That could be viewed one of two ways - either you’ll lap up this lets have fun and rock out riot, or dismiss it as more of the same. I mean, what Danko Jones do is pretty much what you see is what you get, but in no way can you deny that it’s also a huge wallop of fun.

Is it an age thing that makes me a little tired of new music that asks me if I want to get high? That’s the imaginatively titled “Get High?”, while the strutting double entendre of “Stiff Competition” doesn’t exactly challenge the senses. Don’t get me wrong, my music racks are crammed with fare that makes this stuff look positively refined and varied in terms of its lyrics, but surely after 11 albums these guys have more to say than “She’s My Baby” and “Let’s Make Out”? Anyway, to get too churlish about this side of Danko Jones is to miss the point, this band are all about the rock, the roll, the party and good times, and in fairness they deliver them again and again, all wrapped up in bulging riffs and sing along choruses.

As with previous Danko Jones albums, I find that spending time with these guys is a lot of fun, but it’s all maybe just a little too obvious and a little too, well, forgettable. Electric Sounds falls perfectly into all of those categories.
