Oreyeon: Equations for the Useless

Italy seems to be slowly becoming a hotbed for stoner and doom bands in recent years, and here we have the latest from Oreyeon, titled Equations for the Useless, more proof that something is definitely cooking in that Italian heavy music stew pot over there. These guys already have a few albums out, and I haven't yet heard those, but this latest is an even heavier and doomier version of the Alice in Chains playbook, with vocals from bassist Richard Silvaggio sounding very much like a young Layne Staley, and the rest of the band dialing up all sorts of doom-laden might. Those fellows would be Andrea Ricci & Matteo Signanini on guitars, and Pietro Virgilio on drums.

Right off the bat, the crushing sounds of "It Was Time" instantly grab you with massive riffs and haunting vocals, and it doesn't let up from there with menacing "Pazuzu", the eerily psychedelic title track (love those spooky guitar and keyboard effects before the booming riffage takes over!), the faster-paced but just as crushing "If", the textured "Downward Spirals", and the bulldozing closer "The Protocol", the latter complete with a memorable chorus and come of the heaviest riffs on the album. If you love Alice in Chains, and always wondered how they would sound if they dialed up the heaviness factor, added in some psych, and got even darker, then Oreyeon is the band for you. Well done!
