G Clef Fusion: Recondite Obbligato

Hailing from Havre de Grace, Maryland, G Clef Fusion is the project of keyboardist Chuck Moyer. According to Bandcamp, “Chuck Moyer plays homage to the great rock, jazz, and fusion instrumental classics and provides a sonic and technical display of challenging high energy music.” Yes, this might be a bit of self promotion but there is no doubting Moyer is a highly skilled musician.

Moyer is a hard-working musician having released no less than seven discs in 2022; six EPs and one full length. The artist mixes jazz, rock, and funk, all propelled by his formidable keyboard skills. On his new album titled Recondite Obbligato, the songs are catchy yet fairly complex, giving the listener something a little different.

The first track “Proscenium Of the Penetralia” is a nice bit of funky fusion featuring outstanding keyboards. On the upbeat “Playing Knights And Weak Ends” rhythmic organ gives a solid backdrop to more complex keyboard embellishments. “Honorificabilitudinitatibus” has a nice groove and added complexity and on “To Chew Ones Cabbage Twice” the massive organ riffs and Jon E.’s biting guitar adds a little rock into the mix. Multiple keyboard lines highlight the complex yet tuneful “Prefer A Slap Over Preterition” while “Acoustical Apojove” mixes catchy jazz with a glistening pop sheen.

I found Recondite Obbligato to be accessible and well played, exhibiting fine musicianship. As such, it just might appeal to both jazz and prog fans alike.
