Max Boogie Overdrive: Stoned Again

Stoned Again is the debut from Los Angeles-based stoner/hard rock act Max Boogie Overdrive, and contains eight songs that bring influences such as Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Motorhead, Orange Goblin, KISS, and UFO. The band features Max Boogie on guitar & vocals (Hittman, Fuzzbubble, The Tikiyaki Orchestra...aka SoT's very own Jim Bacchi) and Drop Dee on lead vocals and bass (Red Square Black, Ravine, The Generals), along with drummer Knuckles (Lords of Altamont, Superbeez) and guitarist RC’s. Loads of riff-o-rama and boogie-fueled grooves are to be found throughout Stoned Again, with Drop Dee's 'Lemmy meets Gene Simmons' styled gruff vocals leading the charge. Things kick off in crushing fashion with "The Devil Knows My Name", a groovy, riffy monster of a song that features some tremendous guitar thunder and loads of hooks, something that you also experience with the album's first single "Suffer Sister". The band dips into some heavy psych on "Freakazoid", allowing both Max and RC to fire off some trippy guitar solos amidst atmospheric & heavy arrangements. "Van Boogie" is a must-hear for any fan of California-based stoner & desert rock...specifically Fu Manchu, complete with some kick-ass riff breakdowns. "Bomb Incoming" is more of a party anthem for all the KISS fans in the house, featuring a sing-along chorus and guest harp from another SoT talent, Rick La Bonte', while "Demonaire" is simply pedal to the metal biker rock, straight out of 1972 and perfect for any MC5 and Alice Cooper fan. The album closes with two more crushers, the upbeat "King of Fire" and the grinding stoner masher that is the title track.

After one listen, you'll be hearing these songs drifting around in your head over and over again, prompting you to crank up the album all over again. Stoned Again is heavy, it's groovy, and it's one of the best stoner rock albums of 2023. Don't miss it!

Max Boogie Overdrive: Stoned Again

It’s good to step out of your comfort zone from time to time. I grew up on hard rock, and for me Max Boogie Overdrive falls right in line, yes, you can throw other labels around if you want, but to my ears this is heavy guitar driven, open the car windows, and crank it up music. The songs are tuneful, infectious, and filled with memorable riffs. They get right down to business on the opening “The Devil Knows My Name”, driving drums and monster guitar and bass with an anthemic chorus. I can guarantee that you won’t be able to shake “Suffer Sister” from your brain, an earworm if I’ve ever heard one. This tune is so good, I’ve played it for a bunch of my buds, and everyone has really dug this one. “Freakazoid” features a terrific solo from guitarist (and fellow SOT contributor) Jim Bacchi (aka Max Boogie).

“Van Boogie” opens with another killer riff, these guys just keep coming at you with heavy catchy in your face music. That’s another point that should be made, you get high energy throughout the 38 minutes of music on “Stoned Again”, there is no laying back and taking a breath, the tunes just keep rocking hard. Add “Bomb Incoming!” to the list of I can’t get that chorus out of my head! I must say as a huge 70’s KISS fan, I get a serious Gene Simmons vibe in the vocal delivery of “Demonaire” (even the bass line), and if you’ve got that, why not a little touch of Ace Frehley in the guitar solo, do you hear it? I love the intro to “King of Fire”, more guitars sprinkled in that 70s style, they just keep coming one after the other.

Let me say a few words about the artwork which is really cool. You have the Stoned Again van which reminds me of my love of the 70’s cartoon Scooby Doo, all I could think of was the Mystery Machine and all those air brushed Van Murals we used to see back in the day, so cool. This is just an absolute blast to play and play loud! I can’t wait until summertime; the neighbors will be getting a dose of Max Boogie Overdrive!
