Tanith: Voyage

Tanith is the side project of Satan lead guitarist Russ Tippins, and Voyage is the second album from the band. He is joined by bassist/vocalist Cindy Maynard, drummer Keith Robinson, and for this album, Blondie guitarist Andee Blacksugar. Together, the band have created another highly enjoyable set of mystical hard rock, taking inspiration from legendary acts such as Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep, Rush, and Thin Lizzy, with the vocal interplay between Russ & Cindy bringing a breath of fresh air to this type of music and plenty of twin guitar harmonies sprinkled throughout. "Olympus By Dawn" is simply magical, loaded with memorable melodies, great vocals, and tasty guitars, while the opening "Snow Tiger" will bring a smile to any fan of Russ' main Satan with its wealth of inventive riffing and soloing. "Adrasteia" is a fast-paced ripper, again punctuated by the two-pronged vocal attack and loads of guitar heroics, while "Mother of Exile" is more of a groover and features some crunchy riff-o-rama, with Cindy's vocals being especially impressive. And, if you love 2112 era Rush, or even early Manilla Road, check out the epic, slightly proggy sounds of "Seven Moons (Galantia Pt. 2)"...complete with deft acoustic guitars, complex time changes, and savage electric guitar work.

The one thing I'm not 100% on board with here is the production, which could use a little 'heft' in spots, but it's honestly not all that much different than the production on the most recent Satan albums, which is raw as well. Still, killer songs and the playing is excellent, so it's a minor quibble on what is a very strong hard rock/metal album from a band deserving of your attention.
