Cannibal Corpse: Chaos Horrific

Chaos Horrific is the 16th studio album from the legendary death metal act known as Cannibal Corpse, and truth me told, this one nearly passed me by in what has been a busy second half of 2023 for new releases. It wasn't until I heard "Blood Blind" recently on SiriusXM's 'Liquid Metal' channel that I realized I hadn't checked this album out, and I'm really glad Chaos Horrific didn't fall off my radar this year, as it's easily one of the best death metal albums I've heard in this calendar year. As with their last album, the addition of Erik Rutan as lead guitarist, along with his production duties, has given this band a new spark. Tracks like "Overlords of Violence", "Summoned For Sacrifice", "Drain You Empty" and the crushing title track offer up just what Cannibal Corpse does best, and that is brutal death metal that is a killer blend of technical and pulverizing. George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher as always does a fine job with the bellowing growls, and the founding rhythm team of Alex Webster & Paul Mazurkiewicz is once again top-notch. It's the guitar tandem of Rutan and Rob Barrett though that sound completely monstrous here; the riffs are gargantuan, the solos blazing, with Erik's production giving everything a nuclear-powered crunch that is undeniable. Check out the already mentioned "Blood Blind" for some of the most potent death metal riffage of 2023...absolutely massive!

Yeah, I really dig this album. The songs are instantly memorable, it's brutal as all hell, and the production is killer. Enjoy it for all its gory glory!

Cannibal Corpse: Chaos Horrific

My Score:

With their trademark blend of technicality and brutality, Cannibal Corpse are kind of viewed as the lovable mascots of death metal. While I'm sure a good bit of that is because they have one of the most likable and lauded frontmen in the scene (George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, he of the huge neck), there's an undeniable amount of good will that is also garnered from having a rock solid discography that has proven to be dependable and reliable over the course of 16 studio albums. While I'm no expert on CC, fans of the band often have an equally difficult time listing their favorite AND least favorite albums by the band. The mark of consistency. As one probably already figured out by this preamble, "Chaos Horrific" is yet another rock solid slab of gore-drenched death metal with everything you've come to expect from the band on full display.

The album starts off with an Alex Webster bass run, and we're off to the races with "Overlords of Violence". a blistering opener that while fairly simple still manages to get the blood pumping with it's nimble fingered riffing and memorable solo section. "Summoned for Sacrifice" is probably my favorite song on "Chaos Horrific", with it's more old school death metal chugs leading into a straight up ass kicking riff that Corpsegrinder deftly and violently growls over with precise intensity. The song also has surprisingly melodic lead work, which easily makes it one of the most interesting and complex CC songs I've ever heard. Killer!

There's a lot to like on the rest of the album as well, but there's undeniably some fatigue that sets in when a band is bludgeoning you to death as CC tends to do. Luckily, there album's runtime clocks in at under 40 minutes, which helps "Chaos Horrific" never feel like it's overstaying it's welcome. It's a fairly short burst of brutality that will really scratch that itch for some meat and potatoes, fairly technical death metal.
