German space-rock/heavy psych act The Spacelords are back with their latest release of cosmic sounds, titled Nectar of the Gods, which follows their excellent 2021 album Unknown Species. The band is comprised of Matthias 'Hazi' Wettstein (guitar), Marcus Schnitzler (drums), and Ekhard 'Akee' Kazmaier (bass), so they are as always in full power-trio mode once again, with the new album featuring four new, lengthy tracks of heavy hitting psych and space rock music. The title track opens up, with intoxicating rhythms and pounding riffs that just crush your skull for nearly 10 minutes. While this is mostly an instrumental band, there are little vocalizations from time to time, but you barely even notice them to be honest. "Endorphone High" follows, a real trippy piece that blends elements of classic Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, and even King Buffalo and Elder, the guitar work is especially outstanding here. "Mindscapes" is another psychedelic blaster, Hazi's wah-wah guitar solos shooting out into deep space, and the 14-minute epic "Lost Sounds of Lemuria" closes out the album in atmospheric fashion, dripping in textures but still chock full of the occasional heavy riff, this is an example of how well this band can fill up long-form compositions with plenty of light and shade, the use of Hammond organ is especially noteworthy here.
Overall, Nectar of the Gods is highly recommended to any fan of heavy space rock and psychedelia.
