The self-titled debut album from the cryptically named band 130R was written during the pandemic lockdown and helped guitarist extraordinaire Edward Box, in his own words, “keep my sanity in the most testing of times.” The result should make all of us feel a little bit better about the world. This is killer melodic hard rock from a band that sounds gloriously -- and boldly -- like Alter Bridge covering Dokken.
The quartet hails from England's Newcastle upon Tyne and roars out of the gate with “All You See,” followed by scorchers like “Rush,” “Damage is Done” and “One More Day,” and “Season of Denial” is a bluesy slow burner that allows the band to stretch its musical wings. But the standout track is “Face in the Crowd,” a super-charged rocker with dark and pulsating verses, an anxious pre-chorus and a full-blown chorus that moves sonic mountains. Even though the album’s quality wanes slightly near the end, the team at Frontiers Records needs to hear this album.
Lead vocalist Ian Humphrey is a major find and brings to mind Göran Edman (Kharma, Brazen Abbot, Karmakanic). He delivers a powerhouse performance that would sound right at home in both clubs and arenas. Box pulls double-duty on guitars and vocals, and Neil Lough on bass and Mick Robson on drums round out a band that seems to have appeared out of nowhere. And just for good measure, 130R throws in some guest solos by other guitarists on half of these tracks.
Box has a deep discography that includes bands (Vendetta, XLR8R) and solo work (Moonfudge, Plectrumhead), and 130R is a worthy addition to his catalog. Although 130R likely could be an auto racing reference, who really cares what it stands for? Just sit back and soak up the good vibes.
