Rival Sons: Darkfighter

Album number seven from US hard rockers Rival Sons, Darkfighter was the first of two planned releases from the band here in 2023, the second being Lightburner. Each one clock in less than 40-minutes in length, but contain no shortage of excellent songs showcasing all we love about this band, who just keep delivering some of the best rock music of any band over the last decade. "Mirrors" busts out of the gate here with plenty of groove and Scott Holiday fuzz guitar, and continues on the fiery "Nobody Wants to Die", complete with a fiery, rip-snortin' vocal from the incredible Jay Buchanan. "Bird in the Hand" is wonderfully playful and psychedelic, "Bright Light" atmospheric and bluesy, "Rapture" is big, bombastic, and slightly Zeppelin-y, "Guillotine" kicks all sorts of ass and features a wailing Buchanan, and both "Horses Breath" and "Darkside" blend Rival Sons ability to mesh fuzz drenched riffs, folky bits, and emotional blues all in one tidy package.

At this point, Rival Sons seemingly can do no wrong, as Darkfighter is an excellent addition to their discography. It might not hit the unrealistic highs of Feral Roots, but it's close. How does Lightbringer compare? Well, read the review...
