Texas heavy metal act Spirit Adrift burst on the scene in 2015, and have been quite busy ever since, as Ghost at the Gallows, their latest effort for Century Media Records, is already their 5th album. The band are comprised of Nate Garrett (vocals, guitar, bass), Micheal Arellano (drums), and Tom Draper (lead guitar). The pandemic seems to have slowed down their momentum ever so slightly, as it's been three years since 2020's Enlightened in Eternity, their longest gap yet, but they've come roaring back with Ghost at the Gallows.
Blending classic metal sounds with '70s hard rock as well as doom, this latest platter kicks off with the Thin Lizzy inspired "Give Her to the River", a meaty rocker with loads of thrilling twin guitar harmonies, giving way to the crushing "Barn Burner" (which, it absolutely is!) and the speedy double bass driven "Hanged Man's Revenge". "These Two Hands" is dark, folky, and doom laden, and "Death Won't Stop Me" is just a pure, no frills headbanger, sounding a bit like Sweden's Grand Magus. The band return to good old fashioned early '80's hard rock & metal with "I Shall Return", while "Siren of the South" has more than a little hint of Metallica on the vocal & riff side of things. The closing near 8-minute title is another huge sounding number on the album, slightly doomy but just big, crushing metal riffage and pounding drums, steeped in atmosphere. The whole album sounds fantastic, and there are enough heavy music styles on display throughout Ghost at the Gallows that should help this one appeal to a wide variety of listeners. One of 2023's best!
