Tyrrell, Jim: Box of Shells

New England-based singer-songwriter Jim Tyrrell has opened for the likes of Don McLean, John Prine, The Avett Brothers and Weird Al -- which should give you an idea of the universality of his pleasant and melodic acoustic-based songs (not to mention the longevity of his career). Box of Shells is Tyrrell’s fifth album, and his first in nine years to feature new material. His warm, comforting vocals and guitar permeate these 10 songs, and he’s backed by a cozy group of musicians who help Tyrrell deliver organic songs that embrace everything from melancholy prog (“Personal Space,” “Was Gonna”) to Gordon Lightfoot (“A Heady Quest”). This release is, by no means, a necessary addition to your CD library. But it’s one of those discs you’ll be glad you own.
