Yawning Man: Long Walk of the Navajo

Long Walk of the Navajo is the new album from Italian act Yawning Man, out now on Heavy Psych Sounds Records. The band features features Gary Arce (Guitar), Bill Stinson (Drums), and the return of Billy Cordell (Bass), and the sessions for the album were inspired by a 'desert storm that hit the Joshua tree landscape that created a dark & gloomy backdrop for the bands creativity and improvisations.' If you are at all familiar with Yawning Man, they've made a career out of packing up their gear and a generator and going out to places to play their mostly improvised instrumental music in nature, and this new studio album comes across just like that (go check out their Live at Giant Rock album for the true live experience!) Just three epic tracks here, the shortest being "Blood Sand" at just under 9-minutes, allowing the trio to weave, soar, and mesh with each other sonically, and there's no shortage of gorgeous soundscapes that bridge the gap between psychedelic rock, prog, and ambient. In fact, the music is so rich and dense here you'd swear there are multiple guitar players as well as a keyboard player present in the studio. "Respiratory Pause" might be my favorite of the three pieces, with it's haunting melodies and dense arrangement featuring some truly acrobatic drumming and layers of guitar washes, but the whole album is just a fascinating example of how lush and mind trippy instrumental psych can be. Highly recommended!
