Roe, Tommy: From Here To Here

Tommy Roe is an American singer/songwriter who had a good run of success in the ‘60s with a string of hits including “Sheila” (1962), “Everybody” (1963), “Sweet Tea” (1966), and “Dizzy” (1969).

Roe is one of the progenitors of early ‘60s bubblegum pop rock and has continued to keep himself busy through the decades. Now you may not think a Tommy Roe should appear on this site but please bare with me. Sure, this is far removed from progressive rock, but it does bare repeating, this stuff is hard to resist. Especially if you enjoy a good pop tune or two.

The catchy pop rock of “Devil’s Soul Pile” opens the album and immediately Roe’s melodic and appealing voice is heard. The soulful backing vocals harken back to the ‘60s, the hook reeling you in. “Traffic Jam” has a smooth sound with some nice saxophone throughout. “Midnight Lights” is a nice bit of jazzy pop and Danny Jordan serves up more delicious saxophone.

For a big yacht rock sound, “A Rose, A Candle and You” will do nicely with its lilting acoustic guitar and pretty melody, just a little melancholic and serene. The uplifting sunshine pop of “Heather Honey” and the pop rock classic “If I Were A Carpenter” are two more fine tracks.

The album ends with the fun “Kick Me Charlie”, reminding us not to take things too seriously.

While this might mostly appeal to those who remember the 1960s, I think a few of you might dig this slice of nostalgia if given a chance. You just never know.
