Marchesi Scamorza: Gemini

Trying to get caught up with my reviewing has led me to Italian progressive rock band Marchesi Scamorza which formed in 2009. The band started out playing covers but it did not take long before they began writing original material. They released the EP titled Sentieri Di Carta in 2011 and followed it with their debut full length album La Sposa Del Tempo in 2012. Then came Hypnophonia (2015) and their latest Gemini (2018).

The band is influenced by classic ‘70s Italian prog, sometimes heavy and sometimes lighter sounds. The album takes on schizophrenia as the main character retreats into the memories of his past as he is unable to deal with reality. The vocals are in Italian so I cannot provide any more detail regarding the lyrics.

The first track “Prendi, rispondi, pesa, vuota” has a slowly evolving soundscape with vibrant synths before the music delves into heavier prog. Even industrial elements enter the fray. A quirky synth begins “Abat-jour” along with soft vocals and clean guitar lines and leads directly into “Ho sentito il vuoto” with its Spanish-like guitar, darker vibes, and near frantic lead vocals. The band’s eclecticism is front and center on this one. One of the catchiest tracks is the rocking “Specchio” where hard prog meets neo, contrasting nicely with the mellow, but sparse instrumental “Ricordi” featuring pretty acoustic/electric guitar and well played synths.

Gemini is an album of contrasts, a diversity of sounds that keeps the music fresh and exciting, and as such should appeal to anyone remotely interested in Italian progressive rock.
