Sherinian/Phillips: Live
The partnership of keyboardist extraordinaire Derek Sherinian and drum legend Simon Phillips (aka. Roger) has proved quite fruitful. This collection comes from the 2022 live debut of these two along with guitarist Bumblefoot and bassist Ric Fierabracci, and this is a formidable band. Sherinian has had a multitude of guests over the years on his solo albums, and this fearsome foursome has done an incredible job reproducing those tracks and adding their unique touch to the music. Each track stands out with these incredible musicians giving their all and going for it. The title track from his latest “The Vortex” kicks things off with a bang, and followed up by the wonderfully melodic “Empyrean Sky” is a great one-two punch. Derek always has great sounds, but I really got into the electric piano he uses in “Temple of Helios”, which also features a subtle organ break. “Seven Seas” and the closing epic “Aurora Australis” knocked me out, just amazing, but honestly, everything here will rock your socks off. If you are a fan of Derek’s solo material, this is a must have to put a cherry on top of the collection.
The liner notes suggest that the duo plan are hoping they can put together more live shows with the support of a good promoter and enough fan interest. Count me in as one who is definitely interested!

Sherinian/Phillips: Live Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2023-11-18 20:26:56 My Score:
Call it prog-rock...call it fusion...call it instrumental prog-metal...or don't call it anything. When keyboard maestro Derek Sherinian and drum legend Simon Phillips get together, the results are generally always top-notch, regardless of how we want to label the music. This new live album, which sees the duo partnering with guitarist Bumblefoot and veteran bassist Ric Fierabracci, features ten tracks from Sherinian's solo career played by this four-piece outfit, and it's a joy to finally hear compositions like "The Vortex", "Temple of Helios", "Intertia", and "The Phoenix" live on stage, as these virtuosos breathe new life into these hard-hitting, mind-blowing songs. You'll have your jaw scraping across the floor throughout, and I'm left thinking that Derek and Simon are musically meant for each other, and Thal's time with the keyboard ace in Sons of Apollo has really rubbed off on the both of them as well. This is an amazing live album, and I hope we see more from this configuration in the not-too-distant future.
