Metheny, Pat: Dream Box

Even a guitar legend can release a new album comprised of unused recordings found on an old, almost discarded hard drive, and have it turn into something spectacular. Such is the case with Dream Box, a new collection of solo instrumental recordings from Metheny that he literally found on an old laptop while he was out on tour, and in fact barely even remembers playing or recording, that features him on solo electric guitar performed in solitude throughout his career. It's a warm collection of 'odds n sods' so to speak, but what a treasure chest of goodies it is. Much like Pat's previous releases on baritone guitar, Dream Box is quiet and reflective, blending original songs and covers, and shows the guitar legend at his most private yet expansive. Each and every song here is simply gorgeous, whether it be the soaring "From the Mountains", the lush "Trust Your Angels", or the charming "I Fall in Love Too Easily", it's just Pat Metheny and his guitar, nothing else, and sometimes that's really all you need to be moved by music from a master. His tone is lovely, his choice of notes and melodies just so perfect; there's a reason this guy has been beloved for so many years. Put a guitar in his hand, and magic just happens. To think that forgotten recordings sound this enchanting is a testament to Pat's talents.

Exquisite....

Metheny, Pat: Dream Box

My Score:

I have had the pleasure of seeing Pat Metheny numerous times, and it has always been a moving experience. One of the most revered artists of our time, Metheny embodies the spirit of what music is all about. It seems he’s constantly releasing music or out touring, does he ever take a break? The interesting back story to Dream Box is these are songs Metheny stumbled upon on his computer that he does not recall recording.

The music is soft, ethereal, and it feels like Pat is sitting right next to you while playing. The results are gorgeous, Pat’s touch on the guitar allows you to hear every nuance, his rich tone, and the chording in combination with evocative melody lines is simply perfect. We are coming into the perfect time of year for an album like this to be enjoyed. I plan to have this one playing on those cold dark nights, sitting and relaxing by a warm fire and enjoying the pure sound emanating through Metheny’s guitar. The albums strength might also be its only drawback, this is mood music to me, and may require you to be in a certain mindset to sit back and enjoy its charms. But, when that mood hits, I think this is an album that I will reach for over and over again.
