One of the best things about Sea of Tranquility is its open-minded readers/listeners, who understand good music is good music -- even if it doesn’t slot neatly into prog, fusion, rock or jazz. Enter Pardon the Interruption, a San Francisco-area four-piece band that flies under the self-proclamed umbrella of “prog pop," even though Apple Music identifies the band’s genre as "R&B." But press “play” on the band’s second album, Hot N’ Fresh, and you’ll hear funky blues (“Opa!”), Elvis-inspired stompers (“We Can Figure It Out”), sock-hop rockers (“Cindy Will Prevail”), angular prog (“Construction Man”), Eighties pop ("Life Is Fantastic") and reggae-influenced yacht rock (“Higher”).
This much is true: However the hell you want to categorize Pardon the Interruption’s playfully music, these guys will make you want to sing loud and shake your ass like you just don’t care. Recorded live with minimal overdubs in a studio in San Rafael, Calif., this is the sound of versatile musicians -- horns! djembe! -- having the time of their lives. When they’re not eating pizza, that is. (Check out the album’s back cover).
The front cover, meanwhile, is meant to replicate a pizza box, and the album’s subtitle is “A Full 12” of Greasy Goodness!” This is tasty stuff, especially if you’re not sure what you’re hungry for.
Interruption pardoned.
