Mother Iron Horse: Under The Blood Moon

Let us take a trip to Salem, Massachusetts, a home very befitting for the doom metal foursome known as Mother Iron Horse. The band formed in 2018 and released their debut album The Lesser Key a year later. Then the pandemic hit causing the band to cancel their touring plans, the result was a return to the studio and the creation of their sophomore effort titled Under The Blood Moon, released in 2022.

Mother Iron Horse play kick ass doom rock, heavy and dark, with a huge nod to all things occult, just look at the song titles to get a sense of the evil lurking about. Speaking of which (or should I say witch), the album’s first track “The Devils Work” hits hard right out of the gate with razor edged guitar riffs and intense lead vocals. The groove is deep, and the guitar is ever present, including a melodic solo to soak up the earworms. “The Witches” is all distorted heavy doom, sounding like it was forged out of the bowels of hell. Not for the squeamish but definitely for those who appreciate an intense onslaught of heaviness. “Old Man Satan” features darkly hued vocals laced with ferocity, interesting guitar/drum rhythms, as well as a grooving bass line. It all adds up to some pure demonic bliss. More heavy occult is featured in the creepingly slow doomy intro of “Nocturnal Eternal” where the guitar riffs will etch into your brain. The vocals are absolutely awesome, a mixture of heavy clean and intense growling. The twin tracks, “Samhain Dawn” and “Samhain Night” showcase the bands’ diversity with the former exuding a quieter moodiness before exploding with a frenzied vocal/guitar attack while the latter delves further into heavy doom and hazy tripped out spaciness.

Under The Blood Moon is a wonderful doom album, intense, moody, and freakishly creepy. Music that will certainly keep you on your toes, especially in the dark of the night.

A Ripple Music release.
