Mancuso, Matteo: The Journey

It’s not often that someone comes along who breathes life & revitalizes an instrument. Let me introduce you to Matteo Mancuso, a 26 year old Italian guitarist who will absolutely blow you away. He’s been all over YouTube showcasing his unique Flamenco like approach to lead guitar, using all his fingers rather than a pick. The results are stunning, and you need to watch these videos to believe them.

The Journey is Mancuso’s solo debut, and he proves himself as a versatile player and writer. If you want something in the traditional jazz vein, try out “Polifemo�, or maybe something bluesy ala “Blues for John�. If it’s acoustic guitar you crave, Mancuso showcases those skills throughout, but “Time To Leave� and the gorgeous title track should fit the bill.

For me, I’ll be honest and I get the most enjoyment when Matteo is going for broke. His fluid and fast lead lines are stunning, and he’s got an excellent melodic sensibility. The opening “Silkroad� leaves no doubt that we have a new guitar hero in our midst. A silky guitar melody soon gives way to some fretboard flying. Some of the other more aggressive tracks include “Drop D�, “Samba Party� and my personal favorite “Falcon Flight�.

Mancuso is the real deal, I promise you that much! I expect we will hear great things from him as he continues to grow and cultivate his talents. The Journey gets better with each listen, and I can’t wait for his next one.
