Beck, Jeff: New York 1980 (The Classic Palladium Broadcast)

It’s still hard to believe that Jeff Beck is no longer with us, but thankfully we will have his music which will live on. This set is taken from a live FM broadcast of a show at New York’s Palladium on October 12th 1980. The lineup is Simon Phillips (drums), Tony Hymas (Keyboards) and Mo Foster (bass), and this is a formidable unit. The band rocks and grooves on command, always serving the song but adding those special touches that elevate the music. The magic of Jeff Beck is making all this instrumental music that is instantly recognizable, and that is not easy. Beck is so melodic and lyrical, while his selection of songs to cover is as if he wrote them himself, it all works.

You get the sublime FM staple of “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” and although a cliché, his guitar cries with the best of them here. The band sticks with him, subtle one minute, and smoking the next. This begins a stretch of tunes where the band hit their stride. “Space Boogie” kicks things into high gear and leads into the classic “Freeway Jam”. You never get the feeling that Beck was showing off (although you know he has the goods), his playing always serves the song. “Led Boots” , “Scatterbrain” just continue to show the power of this unit, smoking! The show ends with Beck’s fiery guitar ripping through “Going Down”.

This is a terrific edition to your collection, good sound quality and a band that feels like they are in tune from start to finish. We miss you Jeff, thank you for all the great music!
