Faerie Ring: Weary Traveler

Hailing from Evansville, Indiana, Sea of Tranquility brings you Faerie Ring and no, this has nothing to do with symphonic prog, capes, or hobgoblins. Instead, what you get is some of the best spaced out doom I have heard in a while, very mystical and completely enthralling. Weary Traveler is the band’s debut album, released in April of this year.

From soaring, hazy vocals to fuzz soaked guitar riffs and catchy melodies, the band has made a fine doom metal album beginning with the addictive title track. A spacey intro leads to a catchy guitar riff and soon after the band explodes with full blown intensity. The clean and melodic vocals and some excellent guitar effectively sets the hook for the rest of the album. The heavy “Silver Man in the Sky” begins with a collage of noisy guitar leading directly to a bone crushing doom metal riff that imbues heaviness. A galloping riff follows, filled with distortion as the clean vocals add an element of mystery. The fast paced “Never Rains at Midnite” has an almost hypnotizing affect with its distortion filled soundscape and slowly evolving doom riffs that hit like a sledgehammer. The contrasting quieter interludes will hold the listener in rapt attention. If one could call doom metal bombastic, “Lover” would fit the bill, another excellent track.

With six tracks and a concise forty minutes of music, Weary Traveler will surely have you hitting the repeat button. Just an excellent album and one that I easily recommend to anyone interested in heavy music.

A King Volume Records release.
