Herd of Bison, comprised of Boston-area college students with membership in a slew of other bands, bills itself as an adventurous musical collective that owes a debt to progressive-rock giants like Rush, Genesis, Dream Theater, King Crimson and Yes. But don’t expect to hear any retro retreads on the band’s debut album, Herd Mentality. These five songs -- all penned or co-penned by drummer Ben Lokuta, whose main band The Cuz is a prize-winning rock ’n’ roll mainstay in its hometown of Madison, Wis. -- incorporate elements of hip-hop, reggae and jazz while showcasing Lokuta’s songwriting depth and featuring male and female vocals.
Three of the tracks on Herd Mentality clock in at longer than 10 minutes, and the record embraces unconventional song structures, sprawling guitar solos and a refreshing quirkiness that indicate Herd of Bison are capable of paying respect to the legends while still blazing a trail of its own.
