Cloudy Sun, the 2022 second album from Herd of Bison, may be half the length of this Boston collective’s 2021 debut, Herd Mentaility, but it's not short on bold musicality. This is a band that embraces contemporary hip-hop as enthusiastically as classic progressive rock. Think King Crimson, with dashes of rap. Or maybe a way off-kilter Yes.
Drummer Ben Lokuta wrote all the music and shares lyric-writing credits, yet this is a fully-operational epic ensemble in which no one musician, instrument or vocalist dominates -- except maybe for the soaring guitar solo on “The moment,” which sounds like David Gilmour joined Herd of Bison in the studio for a few minutes. All six songs here play as one continuous 22-minute suite, with no space between them -- another nod to the band’s prog forefathers. Male and female vocals add to Herd of Bison’s unconventional approach, and Cloudy Sun serves as another step in the right direction for this adventurous young band.
