Yardbomber: Herpy’s Bar & Grill

“Humour helped make me who I am,” reads the message printed inside the digipak of Herpy’s Bar & Grill -- the debut CD from vocalist and guitarist Jeremy Green’s Yardbomber project. “It gave me strength and the ability to laugh at myself and yes, even others, on my darkest days. Yardbomber is what happens when that kid grows up to be a musician.”

l love the name and vibe of this wacky Canadian trio, which also features Rich Brown on bass and JT Aylward on drums. If you’re not able to tell from the album title and track listing, Yardbomber’s debut oozes with un-PC cleverness and snarkiness bordering on absurdity. No wonder a commenter on the trio’s Facebook page claimed that “If Einstein and the Coco Puffs bird had a love child, it would be Yardbomber.”

Imagine Frank Zappa fronting Rush, or maybe a Lemmy-led Primus and you’ve got some idea of what Yardbomber sounds like. Many of these songs adhere to a kinda-sorta rap-rock style (“Halloween Ho,” “Who’s to Blame” and “Butchy & Burt”), but they’re bookended by more full-blown songs like the raucous opener “Bad Is Bad (That’s Not Good)” and the super-catchy closer “Super Catch Ray.”

File under “21-minute listening fun.”
