Saints & Sinners: Fly

Hailing from Tampa, Florida, Saints & Sinners are a five-piece outfit harking back to rock’s halcyon days through a keen mix of Uriah Heep and Deep Purple, with a dash of Rainbow thrown in for good measure. At times that homage maybe comes across as just a smidge too faithful, “Snakes & Ladders” striking in its likeness to all manner of Heep and Purple numbers from the early 70s, but with the Hammond from Ralph Azzurro howling and singer Clive Mitchell thrusting out his best Gillan like bellows, there’s no denying it’s a whole load of fun.

Released in 2019, being honest, there’s a lo-fi, budget feel to everything on Fly, from the cheap packaging and questionable CD cover to the overall perfunctory sound quality. And yet, what’s delivered in huge amounts is music that clearly comes straight from the heart, Saints & Sinners love the style of music they create and no mistake. With only four tracks on show, this EP still climbs well over the 20 minute mark, so there’s room for Chris Dox to sprinkle liberal amount of guitar goodness over “Fly” and “My Will”, as he and Azzurro do a great job of leaving each other just enough to room to shine in the spotlight.

Things seem to have stalled for this band in the four years since this EP was released and apart from a sparsely detailed website, their online presence is virtually invisible. That in itself is a real shame, because even with the obvious flaws that this release shows, the talent on display and promise within the songwriting, is clear to hear. Fans of the bands who undoubtedly inspire Saints & Sinners should give this outfit a listen, just don’t expect the unexpected.
