Warr guitarist Jason Blake and drummer Marco Minnemann make a formidable duo on Subsequent Ruins. Minnemann is a force to be reckoned with; his powerful drumming drives these songs hard. The Warr guitar motif that kicks off “Obsolete Perception” is catchy, yet heavy and powerful. “Pretense of the Herd” completely engulfs the listener with its energy; there is a lot to absorb from just two musicians. A haunting melody for “Follow I (Emanated Hook)” shows a subtle side to counter the heavier tracks. The Crimson-esque fury of “False Streets of Entanglement” leaves no doubt that these guys can rock. “Follow II (The Coercible Leash) takes the opposite approach with the Warr guitar showing off its expansive sounds, atmospheric, yet gritty. You get the combination of great playing and songs on Subsequent Ruins, and I hope to hear more from Blake/Minnemann in the future. There is no falloff either, the closing “A Bleak Outcome” is a 10 minute tour de force of heavy powerful distorted guitar riffing goodness, with a few left turns for good measure.
