Obituary: Dying of Everything

Obituary is a seminal death metal band from Florida, USA.

After more than 30 years of music and almost a dozen albums, Obituary have managed to maintain their trademark style. As is the case for a lot of veteran bands, this trademark style is both a blessing and a curse. I’ve heard them referred to as ‘The AC/DC of Death Metal’ which is a backhanded way of showing that they’re both classic and generic in the once sentence. And with this in mind I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn by saying that Obituary’s latest album won’t revolutionize the death metal landscape in 2023. With all that said I do think Dying of Everything is a solid album and more than a worthy of its place in the band’s revered catalogue.

John Tardy’s vocals are some of the most identifiable in the business and are a real feature on this release. Obituary’s penchant for mixing up slow and sinister riffs with the breakneck speed is a good mix for my tastes. I’ve listened to the album in a range of listening moods and when I’m in the mood for straight-ahead, hard-hitting death metal, there’s no doubt it hits the right spots.

This album does what it says on the tin; so there is little point trying to craft a sprawling essay-like critique to sum this release up. It’s not overly bold or revolutionary, but it is honest and true to the Obituary name and sound.
