Haavisto, Jukka: Reflections
More Finnish Fusion for us to enjoy!! Reflections is the first solo release from bassist Jukka Haavisto, and it’s a winner! The opening synth strains and pulsing bass of “Four Days After” ring of older Genesis to my ears. On the second go round guitarist Johannes Granroth gets to shine, and finally Haavisto’s fleet fingers do their work, but all in service of the song. “Dancing in the Woods” starts with bass and drums setting the groove, with some cool Rhodes and tasty guitar licks sprinkled over the top. Keyboardist Vili Itapelto plays so tastefully here, I could just listen to these guys jam on this groove forever. The heat gets turned up when Granroth steps up, just so good. “Three Reflections” keeps things moving with more stellar playing, this may be Haavisto’s album, but he certainly gives free reign to his bandmates. “Noora” is that moment in most albums when you get to sit back and take a breath, and let the music flow through you. A mellow piece with plenty of substance to it. “Opus nr.8” moves the needle, and you get a flash of drummer Severi Sorjonen, as the longest track, more spicy soloing is here to enjoy. There are no letdowns here, the record finishes out as strong as it started. “Opus nr.11” gives me my guitar fix once again, and continues to gain momentum throughout its 7+ minutes. I hope to hear more from Haavisto and his band, don’t let this one slip past you!
