Unaligned: Inner Dimensions

Due to the popularity of their album Inner Dimensions, Unaligned have decided to release it on CD in January 2023. Originally released in April 2022, Unaligned who feature ex-members from such bands as Accused Creator, Demon King And Inferi, among others, have decided to share their album in physical form so let's have a closer look.

Captured within the fairly short run-time Unaligned summon up a brutally explosive brand of Technical Death Metal that also leans heavily into their groove and progressive tendencies. Of course the technical tropes are there to be sure but Inner Dimensions does come packed with plenty of its own personality and flavor.

Unaligned have said about Inner Dimensions the following: “Inner Dimensions is a concept album that takes the listener deep into the refuge of one’s own mind, challenging the listener to explore and overcome the very fabrics of their own destined reality, while coming to face with the inner turmoils and demons of their life. To overcome or to be overcome, one will only find within the Inner Dimensions.”

Musically Inner Dimensions is very consistent with no songs particularly standing out above the rest. I personally liked the title track, “Of Chaos” and “Kenopsia” but really the whole thing is very solid and high quality technical death metal.

My only gripes with the album are ones that I have with most tech death albums these days. Firstly the drumming, which is great by Jack Blackburn, has that typical clicky typewriter bass drum thing. Now it’s not the most egregious version of that sound I’ve ever heard but I am getting a little sick of it in general. The second gripe is that even though everything sounds very cool, it’s not really very original. There are plenty of Tech and Prog Death Metal bands that sound exactly like this these days. So it’s not likely to stand out in my memory. I know that sounds harsh and I don’t wanna take away from the fact that the material is strong and played fantastically as well. It just sounds like I’ve heard this album many times before from many different bands at this point.

Inner Dimensions is a strong effort and for fans of Technical and Progressive Death Metal that isn’t shy about sprinkling in a healthy dose of groove into the mix, they will find plenty to enjoy here.
