Aggression: From Hell With Hate

Aggression are one of Canada’s most well loved and respected classic Thrash Metal bands that were grown out of the 80’s. Having legendary status among fans and fellow Thrash alumni for not only their face smashing brand of Thrash but they were also famous for their hard partying back in the day with many of the genre's legends who would tour in Quebec, which is the band's home.

The band has a long and tumultuous history, replete with line-up changes, drug abuse and legal dramas. Yet despite all of this, and despite having been defunct for a number of years ever since their rebirth in 2014 Aggression has been going strong. Touring all over the world and sharing the stage with many of the biggest names in extreme metal as well as releasing several albums and EP’s along the way.

Now after more line up changes Aggression, who are led by Denis “Sasquatch” Barthe, have returned from the studio once more with their latest offering, From Hell With Hate. The good news is that they have not taken the foot off the gas at all. Captured within is another full frontal attack of brutal, anti-christian Thrash Metal.

The moment the album opens with “I.N.R.I” with its in your face anti-christian message replete with the wailing sounds of hell at the beginning, you know this album is gonna be no holds barred. The second track “Antichrist Devil Cunt” is interesting because of the inclusion of female vocals that give it a surreal religious quality which juxtaposes very well with the anti-religious sentiment and the intense Thrash Metal sound. The serene female vocals reappear throughout the album and it definitely is a cool contrast.

“Let’s Burn This Church to the ground” conceptually embraces their inner angry black metal teenager yet of course firmly in a Thrash Metal framework. It’s perhaps a little cheesy though. Still a fun track though. “The Nightstalker” taps into the punkier end of Thrash. The short “Precise Execution” is basically an instrumental Death metal interlude. “Crows Of Still Creek” has a stab at being a bit more vocally melodic and perhaps falls a little short of the mark there but the song has some cool riffs and changes nonetheless. It’s also important to note that the playing throughout by all involved is very good too. The guitars are ripping, bass in there and bubbling away underneath and the drums are full of power and impact. The vocals fall a little flat in general but they are definitely serviceable and let's be honest in Thrash that's all you need most of the time. The album closes with “Left-Hand Larceny” which channels some classic megadeth before launching into the classic Aggression attack.

From Hell With Hate is a strong addition to the Aggression catalog and sees this version of the band back and kicking ass. At this point in the evolution of metal I find the whole anti-religion tropes a bit boring and played out and yes they aren’t doing anything revolutionary here but their Thrash is true and hard hitting and overall a damn good time.
