Sun Voyager: Sun Voyager

New York based Sun Voyager came onto to the scene in 2018 with the release of their debut album Seismic Vibes and have since dropped their self titled second album in October 2022.

The album hits the mark with there brand of heavy and doomy psychedelic rock, fantastic riff progressions, dense layers of fuzz, and expansive soundscapes.

The first track “God Is Dead II” has huge guitar riffs drenched in distorted fuzz, frenzied guitar attacks, and distant vocals adding to the overall eerie vibe. Keyboards further enhance the mood as the riffs slice through with the utmost intensity. The vocals are pretty heavy as well but somehow adding to the band’s addictive sound.

“Run For Your Life” starts with a slower tempo and riffs laced with doom, then the pace quickens with vocals buried underneath a layer of psychedelic distortion having an overall mysterious vibe. I love the moody sections where the band lay on the thick atmospherics.

“Some Strange” starts with distortion, a kind of fractured guitar riff, leading into full fledged psychedelic rock. I hear a bit of Hawkwind here, especially the cool use of spacey effects giving it all a cosmic feel. The song’s instrumental build and unpredictable nature is highly effective.

“Rip The Sky” is one of those songs that will have you mesmerized with its face melting guitar riffs and ethereal keyboards, highly intoxicating as the band create some ultra cool atmospheres. “To Hell We Ride” is at its core heavy psychedelic rock with that raw garage-like feel, while “Feelin’ Alright” explores different colours and textures with its creative use of distorted guitar. This band is far from one dimensional.

The album ends with the heavy “The Vision”, the distortion filled riffs pummelling your senses, all full speed ahead with the volume turned to the max.

Sun Voyager is certainly a band to be reckoned with, another fantastic heavy rock album from 2022. Highly recommended!

A Ripple Music release.
