!GeRald!: The Lost Tapes

The imaginative experimental rock quartet and visual arts project !GeRald! hails from France and has earned respect in that country’s noise rock/avant-garde scenes. One listen to The Lost Tapes -- which may not have been "lost" at all and instead recorded between late 2019 and mid-2021 -- and you’ll hear why.

With influences ranging from King Crimson to Magma, The Dillinger Escape Plan and “anything that makes noise” (according to the band’s Soundcloud page), !GeRald! presses “play” on The Lost Tapes with opener “Raskol’s Crime,” which boasts crashing pianos, anxious swirls and a harshness that’s oddly reassuring and gratifying. “The Dead Dance,” as its title implies, is spooky and comes with creepy sound effects. “Fire in a Madhouse,” on the other hand, crescendos from dramatically delicate to playful to downright aggressive, and that aggressiveness continues on the aptly titled “Still Fire in a Madhouse.” That said, “Mr. Sophistication” is a bizarre and out-of-place track featuring sound extracts from such films as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Elephant Man, Apocalypse Now and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as well as snippets from Kate Bush and David Bowie. Things are back on track for the two-act “Waterfront Ratholes,” a headspinningly complex piece of music that collectively runs about 17 minutes and features vocals (unlike the rest of this album).

If you like adventurous music designed to be seen as well as heard -- or simply adventurous sounds that take you somewhere new -- invite !GeRald! into your speakers.
