Maristo, Ossi: Arc

What’s in the water in Finland? Guitarist Ossi Maristo wastes no time taking off on Arc's opening track “The Hunt”. The intensity remains high during “Supernovae” and is checking all the right boxes. Maristo plays fluid melodic lines that impress but ultimately serve the song. Maristo’s bandmates are a tight unit firing on all cylinders which makes this much more than a guitarists album. Tapio Backlund (Bass) and Jonne Taavitsainen (drums) make these tracks come alive. The perfect example is during “Supernovae” where they transition from the heavier rocking to a cool funky groove to ride out the track.

“Vincent” adds a touch of atmosphere with acoustic guitar and lap steel, and some nice echoing Rhodes piano. As you work your way through the disc, keyboardist Kasperi Kallio makes his presence felt. “Remembrance” slowly blossoms with gorgeous guitar and piano, and at just under four minutes feels like it ends too quickly. The final three tracks are where Kallio steps out, the piano and guitar interplay are terrific, there’s nothing quite like the sound of an acoustic piano. “Maldivian Multiball” has Kallio dancing across the piano with plenty of chord changes while Maristo solo’s. “Shadowfigures” has my ear turned to the beautiful piano runs, and the intensity that builds throughout the track is impressive. I look forward to hearing more music from Maristo and his mates in the future, a classy disc.
