Acid King: Beyond Vision

Stoner Doom institution Acid King return with their first full length album in nearly 8 years titled Beyond Vision.

This album is killer. It gives you everything you want from an Acid King release, slow doomy riffs and Lori S’s trademark vocals which float above the heaviness with a laid back charm. On Beyond Vision Acid King have administered a heavy dose of keyboards and synthesizers too, which creates even more psychedelic edge to the sound than what we’ve come accustomed to hearing from the band. Beyond Vision was heavily influenced by sci-fi films including "2001: A Space Odyssey" and the 2019 "Apollo 11" documentary, and subsequently the songs all flow into one another, which makes for an enjoyable spacey trip.

The opening track "One Light Second Away" is a brilliant track with a riff that’s so good and so simple that it’s almost unimaginable that it hadn’t been written before. It’s a corker of a riff and a great track generally which sets the tone for the rest of the album brilliantly.

That sort of critique could be copy and pasted 7 times in this review, because all the tracks on the album have a big, memorable riff and hit all the right spots for this style of music. Acid King play with a looseness and swagger which is a really great fit for this style of music, and a refreshing change up in an era of over produced and ultra-precise recordings.

There’s nothing else left to say really. If you’re a fan of stoner doom then this album is an essential new release. Beyond Vision is a great addition to Acid King’s discography and an early standout album for this style of music in 2023.

Acid King: Beyond Vision

My Score:

Here is a band that has been around since 1993, with roots beginning in San Francisco. The band is Acid King and this is my first acquaintance with the band. Doom and heavy rock are the two main courses you will find on their seventh full length titled Beyond Vision.

Their sound is truly cosmic with a good amount of trippy spaciness. The band is great at setting the mood and atmosphere, take the album opening instrumental “One Light Second Away” for a prime example. A rumbling sound and a muted pulsating beat, very slow, the band is in no hurry, preferring to focus on atmosphere and tension, holding the listener on every note. Riffs, lightly coated with fuzz, proceed slowly as the groove settles in. A clean guitar solo follows suit, where every note has meaningful impact. The sound is absorbed with a doomy, spacey vibe that is resoundingly addictive.

Next is “Mind’s Eye” beginning with trippy dirge-like riffs, emerging from deep, low end guitar noise. The echoey chords add to the music’s mystical leanings. Soon an eruption of guitar fuzz lets there be no doubt this is heavy stuff. The vocals, while not used often are excellent and mesh with the music in near perfect fashion. I love how they sound just a little distant and slightly behind the mix. The guitar solo is another slow burner.

“90 Seconds” is inundated with smouldering feedback and heavy doom riffs. The near creepy atmosphere and soaring vocals makes for an impactful listen. With “Electro Magnetic”, the echo effects and ominous spaciness as the guitar slowly brews is what I might imagine if the universe slows down and you enter another time and place.

The slow burning doom of the title track with near ethereal vocals and the album’s last track “Color Trails” where minimalistic guitar chords lead into outstanding riffs and exuberant drum work are both album highlights.

Acid King is a band at the peak of their powers and Beyond Vision proves it without a doubt. This is an album I will reach for often and I suggest you do the same.

A Blues Funeral Recordings release.

Band members:
Lori S (guitar and vocals)
Jason Landrian (guitar, keyboards)
Bryce Shelton (bass, Moog synth on “Beyond Vision”)
Jason Willer (drums)
