Lenz, B.D.: It's Just a Dream

Hailing from NJ, Contempo-Jazz guitarist B.D. Lenz serves up some tasty licks and melodic songs that seem to grow on you with each listen. Lenz’s music has appeared on hundreds of TV shows (“Breaking Bad”, “Young Sheldon”, “Catfish”) and he’s toured the world as a sideman.

Lenz wastes little time as he shows off his fine chops in the opener “So It Begins”. He continues to sprinkle licks throughout, and I do enjoy the trading off he does with saxophonist Geoff Mattoon. “Ready. Set. Go” has a King Crimson vibe, and the song feels like it is in constant motion. I also really like the horns and piano parts throughout the track. For me, things get a little smooth in the middle of the CD, I would like to hear more of Lenz’s impressive playing. I understand the need for variety, and that the focus is on the compositions, but tracks 4-6 take the wind out of the sails a bit. “Looking In, Looking Out” features some terrific guitar/sax interplay, but, it can get a bit smooth, I’d like a few more rough edges. “Crypto” has nice trade-offs between the guitar and sax, and “The Speed of Sound” is my favorite track, this is where Lenz really shines, and what I’d like to hear more of from him.

Lenz saves his guests for last, as Mike Stern is featured on “Our Darker Angels” and Randy Brecker is featured on the closing “How Did We Get Here?”. The more I listen the more I find myself enjoying this CD which is a big positive. Lenz and his cast of players are fine musicians and there is a lot to like here. I am definitely spending more time absorbing this music, a very enjoyable listen.
