TerraSound: Abstract Portrait

Hailing from Greece and Russia, TerraSound is “on a mission to create the best metal music ever.” That’s pretty ambitious. And while the trio’s debut, Abstract Portrait, is not the best metal album ever, it rattles with thick riffage and rolls with gutsy vocals for a sound that falls somewhere between old-school heavy metal, thrash, doom, prog and hard rock. The album opens with “Tidal Nights,” a killer cut during which TerraSound eases listeners in before unleashing singer/bassist Vasilis Kakafikas’s beastly vocals. The sharp melodies carry over to “Fire of Destiny,” a rollicking song that alternately borrows from Megadeth and Rammstein, and the nearly eight-minute instrumental “Word of the Sword” proves this band can jam without losing its way. The CD, limited to 500 copies, comes in a colorful and psychedelically chaotic package that suggests a lot of thought went into it. Couple that with cool song titles ("Harsh Purple," "Ruby Stains on Golden Halls") and the promising music contained therein, and TerraSound emerges as a band to watch.
