Holdsworth Pasqua Wackerman Haslip: Proto-Cosmos
For me, there is nothing like a live show. The more I venture into the world of fusion, the more I believe this music needs to be heard live. These performances were captured at Yoshi’s jazz club in Oakland, California back in 2007 which has spawned a DVD and album Blues for Tony. They open with “Proto-Cosmos” with Allan’s amazing guitar work, I’m already sucked in. “Blues For Tony” gets Pasqua’s organ ripping, and I love the fans response to Wackerman’s solo spot. Allan again rips here, and Haslip just bubbles underneath with his amazing bass playing. And folks, we are only two tracks in!! These guys are all in their element, masters of their craft, and drawing me in with every run they play. It’s easy to focus on Holdsworth and Pasqua, but Wackerman and Haslip provide many great moments.
Allan provides an atmospheric intro to “Pud Wud”, and once the song gets going, Haslip really shines underneath Allan’s chording. Pasqua adds some beautiful playing prior to Holdsworth giving us more of what we came for with his remarkable soling. Speaking of, check out his beautiful Piano solo prior to “San Michele”. Coming at this from my angle, if you love Allan, there is plenty of him to go around on this disc, and this quartet of musicians make magic. I for one plan on taking this out often for a spin, it’s that good.
