Manntis: Sleep In Your Grave

Originally gaining notoriety on the "Battle for Ozzfest" US tour and MTV show, California's Manntis are set to unleash their debut album on Century Media. Sleep In Your Grave is a blistering metal assault, a debut that combines technical thrash, hardcore, and a touch of death metal, sure to please fans of Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Pantera, God Forbid, and Meshuggah. The band seems intent on letting their music do the talking and not let the MTV exposure get in the way of how serious they are about their craft-this is some slamming and kick ass stuff here. "Reflections of You" contains some serious guitar thunder to go along with the clean and harsh vocals, while "My Enemy" is an all-out thrash basher with venomous lyrics spouted by lead singer Jake Daniels. The band gets textural amidst all the pummeling riffs and rhythms on the raging "Second Life Ahead", a tune that contains some intricate and experimental guitar work from Adair Cobley and Jeremy Swanson. If you like technical metalcore, look no further than the manic & complex riffery of the crankin' title track, a great example of the power of this outfit.

While Manntis might not be the most original band around, they deliver the goods here on their debut in a big way. The only downside is the album is just under a half hour in length, as each track is between 2-3 minutes long. I would have thought they would have packed a few more songs on this one, or stretched out a bit with some extended musical passages, but hey, it's a good one so I'm sure many will overlook it. Be on the lookout, Manntis have arrived.
