Karaba: All High Ways

A step into the 70’s from Germany’s Karaba with their latest release All High Ways. The opening “Apostel” sounds like early Camel to my ears, and the band does cross the lines of Fusion and Prog Rock, with a touch of spaciness thrown in. Their Bandcamp page lists them as Kraut/Jazz/Prog/Psychedelic/Space and Rock, and I won’t argue with any of those labels. Keyboardist Andreas Kainz pulls out the vintage sounds (organ, Rhodes, synths), and a direct quote from Sea of Tranquility’s Ken Golden: “This guy is channeling some serious Dave Stewart”, and I would agree. I enjoy the electric piano (Rhodes) that I believe makes its first appearance on “Vokers Krieg”, which also offers up terrific unison playing between Kainz and guitarist Louis Bankvas. There is rawness to the band, but that is a positive in my book. By the time you get to “Zehn Sieben” and “Bummser” it starts to feel like the fusion side is in full bloom. What I most enjoy is the band keeps the pace upbeat for practically the entire CD. The closing “Poelserweide” is a head scratcher, with the band showing off their psychedelic space influences, but unfortunately it comes off as mostly a 10 minute noodle fest that goes nowhere. That being said, you get a wonderful CD that will take you back to all that was great about the 70’s prog and fusion scene. Unfortunately, this was released so late in 2022; it may have missed many of those best of lists where it most likely belongs.
