Potter’s Daughter: Weighted Keys (EP)

Potter’s Daughter is a Virginia-based duo that blurs prog, rock, jazz and fusion into an exhilarating listening experience. For Weighted Keys, classical pianist and singer/songwriter Dyanne Potter Voegtlin and multi-instrumentalist Jan Christiana recorded three cover songs that remain faithful to the originals while showcasing Potter’s Daughter’s musical dexterity.

First up is “Night of the Swallow,” on which Potter Voegtlin delivers the same kind of haunting, passionate vocal performance Kate Bush did on her 1982 album, The Dreaming. “Catherine,” meanwhile, is an elegant solo piano piece originally written and recorded by Tom Kelly and beautifully played here by Potter Voegtlin. But the standout cut is the final one, a stunning and goosebumps-inducing version of Joni Mitchell’s “That Song About the Midway,” which appeared on Clouds in 1969. The packaging is made from recycled materials, and the vegetable-based inks used in the printing make them more biodegradable than traditional petroleum-based inks, according to the duo.

At three songs and 16 minutes, Weighted Keys could have used a little more musical heft, but the EP nevertheless serves as a worthy introduction (and a compelling addition) to Potter’s Daughter’s expanding body of work.
