Ravenstine, Allen: Electron Music

Here is a name I have not heard in an awfully long time. You may recall Allen Ravenstine as the keyboardist for the post-punk/experimental band Pere Ubu from 1975-1982 and 87-88. Ravenstine left the band to become an airline pilot and writer. He did not get back into music until 2012 when Robert Wheeler, Pere Ubu’s keyboardist since 1995, invited Ravenstine to work on a documentary project. That was the spark he needed and in 2018 he released Waiting for the Bomb. His follow up is the four EP set titled The Tyranny Of Fiction, each released individually. Ravenstine sought the help of producer and electronic artist William Blakeney (digital synthesizer, GRM tools, Mellotron), finding musicians worldwide and committing their ideas to tape. From there, Ravenstine and Blakeney, reshaped these musical collages, framing the basis of this musical collaboration.

The first EP is titled Electron Music and reviewing individual tracks would be a rather pointless endeavour. Ravenstine uses synthesizers and samples to create a very weird but sometimes intoxicating listening experience. The five tracks cannot be separated, at least from a compositional standpoint, so they do tend to blend together. There are some nice melodies here and there, but it is really the experimental sonic manipulations that form the basis of these five pieces.

For me, this album will have very specific listening requirements. Headphones and late night listening being two of them. If ambient and experimental synth based music is up your alley then you should give Electron Music some attention.
